Swedish researchers shed more light on the hereditary prostate cancer -

It is well known that men with a family history of prostate cancer are at increased risk of developing the disease. The risk to brothers of men with prostate cancer is doubled. But the risk doubled in what, exactly? Prostate cancer my being an indolent condition that does not require treatment, or aggressive and deadly. Obviously, it makes a big difference if a man has an increased risk of developing the indolent or aggressive, but so far these risks has not been known.

The Swedish researchers studied cancer risk in more than 50,000 brothers of men with prostate cancer. Thirty percent of men who had only a brother with prostate cancer were diagnosed with prostate cancer by age 75, about double the national Swedish average risk of 13 percent. Their risk of aggressive prostate cancer was much lower. 9 percent (medium risk by 5 National cent)

Among men who had a father and a brother with prostate cancer, the risk of any form of prostate cancer was as high as 48 percent; the risk of the aggressive form was 14 percent

The researchers also studied how the various risks have been affected by the severity of the cancer in a brother or a father affected :.

"We expected that the risk of aggressive prostate cancer was not significantly increased in brothers of men with indolent form, but it proved almost as high as the risk among men with an aggressive prostate cancer in the family, "says Associate Professor Ola Bratt at Lund University, who led the research project.

" This is an important discovery that should be disseminated to the general public and healthcare professionals. men whose father or brother have an indolent cancer untreated prostate are probably not aware that this increases their risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer. They might not even know that there is prostate cancer in the family, "says Ola Bratt.
