Scientists unravel how herpesvirus fight against our immune system -
How did this virus was unknown until now. Scientists at the HZI research group "Viral Immune Modulation" under the direction of Prof. Melanie Brinkmann were able to show that the virus is actively prevents activation of the innate immune system through Toll-like receptors.
It has not yet been established exactly how and in what part of the function of Toll-like receptor is disrupted. This is one of the leverage points for future research: "The better we understand how the virus protects against attacks on the immune system, the better we can use this knowledge to fight against infections," says Brinkmann
This. can lead to development of new drugs against gammaherpesviruses. "These agents could actively protect the immune system and prevent viruses to win the fight against it," Bussey said. "However, this is still far away."
