An international group of physicians and scientists joined to organizations nonprofit today to encourage pregnant women to limit their exposure to wireless radiation from cell phones and other devices by taking simple measures for themselves and their unborn children protected. The national public awareness campaign, called the BabySafe project is coordinated by Grassroots Environmental Education and Environmental Health Trust, and is based on scientific independent exhibition research connecting to a wireless cell phone radiation during pregnancy to neurological problems and behavior in offspring that resemble attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children
the project promotes BabySafe ten simple steps women can take to limit their exposure to wireless radiation.
1. Avoid carrying your cell phone on your body (eg in a pocket or bra).
2. Avoid holding a wireless device against your body during use.
3. Use your cell phone on the speaker setting or with an "air tube" headset.
4. Avoid using your wireless device in cars, trains or elevators.
5. Avoid cordless phones, especially when you sleep.
6. Whenever possible, connect to the internet with wire cables.
7. When using Wi-Fi, connect only to download, then disconnect and turn off Wi-Fi.
8. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct proximity to Wi-Fi routers .
9. Unplug your home Wi -Fi router when not in use (eg, at bedtime).
10. sleep as far from utility meters wireless (ie "smart") as possible.
"We believe that all pregnant women should be made aware of the research on wireless radiation risks," says Patricia Wood, visiting scholar at the Adelphi University and executive director of Grassroots Environmental Education. "More research is needed to determine exactly how the developing brain is affected, but in the meantime, we certainly have enough evidence of potential risk to recommend taking simple precautions and common sense."
" There is virtually no downside to be careful and protect your baby, "says Dr. Hugh Taylor, chairman of the department of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Yale University School of Medicine, which recently produced a study showing significant behavioral changes in the offspring of mice exposed to cell phone radiation during pregnancy. "We have demonstrated clear causal in mice, and we've already studies showing that women who use cell phones have children with behavior problems. I think so that this testimony very powerful. "
" As a specialist in public health, I am deeply concerned by the experience we carry on our pregnant women and young children today, "says Dr. Devra Lee Davis, author of numerous books on wireless radiation and human health, and founder of Environmental health Trust. "We can not afford to treat this generation as experiments in a subject without control. We have to be smarter."
"Pregnant women deserve to know that the wireless radiation can affect brain development," says Dr. Maya Shetreat-Klein, a pediatric neurologist at New York Bar. "We see alarming increase in the number of children diagnosed with neurological disorders during the past decade, and whatever we can do that may help reduce this rate should be taken very seriously. "
wireless radiation is part of a growing list of environmental exposures thought to interfere with brain development of the fetus normal, with implications that include impairment in communication skills, learning deficits and problems of behavior.
"When you have an environmental exposure that disrupts brain cell connections, a number of things can happen," says Dr. Leonardo Trasande, school pediatrician at NYU Langone Medicine and Professor of environmental medicine at the Wagner school of public Service. "the nerve cells can not communicate as they should, or perhaps the wrong connection is sent to the wrong cell. And therefore there may be permanent changes in the electrical wiring of the brain that can affect all throughout life. "
Joint Statement on the Wireless Pregnancy and radiation advocating caution and research was approved by scientists and healthcare professionals from around the world. the statement calls for women to be informed about the risks of exposure to wireless radiation, and to take precautionary measures while research is conducted over .
