New collaborative research aims to develop better therapies for autoimmune diseases -
Children's Research Institute and Seattle biotech company Kineta, Inc. launched aujourd 'hui the Alliance for children Therapeutics (ACT), a first of its kind in pediatrics and co-financing designed to accelerate the development of new medicines for children and adolescents with lupus nephritis and other autoimmune diseases -immunes as multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.
"funding for pediatric research accuses disproportionately behind the research funding for adult diseases. Thirty percent of the US population is under the age of 21, yet only six percent of all national institutes of the health budget is spent on pediatric medicine and care, "said Jim Hendricks, PhD, president of the children's research Institute in Seattle." This difference translates the limited development of new treatments for children, who now often have no choice but to use drugs to only adults tested. "
There are major obstacles in the development of pediatric therapies and lack of pediatric drug use information poses risks to children and adolescents. the shortage of suitable formulations may refuse access and expose them to drugs that are not designed for their growing bodies. The challenge of recruiting sufficient numbers of pediatric patients for clinical research also delays the development of better therapies for diseases and pediatric conditions
In 2013, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved 27 new drugs. only seven new drugs have been approved for pediatric use in the same year. And clinical trials conducted 55,000 between 05 and 2010, only nine percent have been designed for children.
Translating Research into better medical treatments for children and adolescents
Bringing together one of the top five pediatric research institutions in the United States with a leading biotechnology company ACT aims to accelerate the development of medicines for children and adolescents with autoimmune diseases.
Funding is needed to propel this pediatric research before. ACT based on a model unique collaborative funding which combines philanthropic donations made to Children's Research Institute in Seattle with investments made in Kineta.
"For too long, pediatric studies have been neglected component of clinical trials," said Charles Magness, PhD, President and Kineta CEO. "Kineta has a drug candidate that has completed two adult clinical trials and is well positioned for a clinical trial that could make a real promotion for autoimmune diseases in children."
For their first collaborative project, researchers from Kineta and Seattle Children's Research Institute have already started conducting preclinical laboratory tests to advance the lead compound Kineta called SHK-186 as a potential treatment for lupus nephritis, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the kidney. Although medications available today for lupus nephritis reduce inflammation resulting from the disease, they also suppress the immune system, a side effect that is of particular concern in children. The first pre-clinical research studies have indicated that SHK-186, which is derived from the sea anemone venom, reduces inflammation while allowing the immune system intact.
"There is a huge need for drugs designed for children and adolescents," said the 18-year-old patient, Children's Hospital of Seattle Kathia Flores Vega, who was diagnosed with lupus when she was 11. "A lupus diagnosis can present daily challenges, not only for the person with the disease, but the whole family. so I'm encouraged to see ongoing research and new treatment options for lupus and other autoimmune diseases that will help so many children in need of better drugs and treatment options. "
Furthermore autoimmune diseases mentioned above, afflicting nearly a million children and adolescents in the United States, SHK-186 showed the first signs of being a potential treatment for allergic asthma. It is estimated that nearly 10 million children in the United States are affected by asthma.
The initial funding will help move research on lupus nephritis ACT in a clinical setting. It will also support work to adapt SHK-186 to become a viable treatment for other autoimmune diseases.
