Instant oatmeal provides greater satiety than equal calories of ready-to-eat oat cereal -
New research published in the Nutrition Journal shows that calories for that content to even one serving of instant oatmeal is more filling than an oat-based cereal ready-to-eat (RTE). The researchers found that eating a bowl of instant oatmeal for breakfast is more satiating and helps manage hunger better than the same amount of calories from a foreground, oat-based cereals, even when they are consumed in smaller portions than previously found.
Frank Greenway, MD and colleagues at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, lA, tested three breakfasts 217.5 calories in different oat base. Statistically significant results showed that instant oatmeal improved satiety, satiety sensation and reduces the desire to eat more than one RTE, the oat-based cereals.
Forty-three men and healthy women completed the survey randomized crossover controlled. After an overnight fast, subjects completed three breakfast tests in random order at least one week apart. Each breakfast consisted of 150 calories of instant oatmeal, oatmeal old or RTE cereal plus skim milk calories 67.5 lactose. After eating breakfast, hunger and satiety the subjects measurements were assessed at 30, 60, 0, 180 and 240 minutes.
The results showed that when the subjects ate the instant oatmeal, they reported less hunger from the RTE cereal. Oatmeal also provided increased fullness and reduced desire to eat more. The researchers say that the viscosity of oat flour was higher than the RTE cereal -. This could explain the differences in hunger and appetite control
