Endocrine Society Announces First Price and researchers winners FLARE paid internships -

The Endocrine Society is pleased to announce the winners of the first Awards in 2014 researchers and future leaders advance research in Endocrinology (FLARE) paid internships.

early researchers prices, supported by the Endocrine Society, were created to recognize the achievements of early career researchers in research in endocrinology. The FLARE program, which launched in August 2012, provides opportunities for training and professional development for senior graduate students from underrepresented minorities, postdoctoral and clinical fellows in health research of the hormone. The FLARE prices are supported by the National Institutes of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of Health.

The first investigators of this year and FLARE Awards will be presented at the joint meeting of the International Society of Endocrinology and the Endocrine Society - ICE / ENDO 2014 - .. in Chicago, IL on June 21 -24

2014 winners 2014 the first researchers the Endocrine Society Award for achievement in research Endocrine are listed below

  • Houda Benlhabib, PhD, is an instructor research in the Department of biochemistry of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. His research focuses on the regulation of development and hormonal epigenetic changes surrounding the gene encoding the major protein surfactant in fetal lung tissue.
  • Lily C. Chao, MD, is assistant professor in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Los Angeles Children's Hospital in Encino, California Throughout his clinical training, she has maintained a keen interest in understanding the molecular basis of resistance to insulin. Dr. Chao is currently studying Nur77 nuclear receptor, a key mediator of glycolysis and glucose utilization, to determine how it controls muscle.

  • Andrew Dauber, MD, Assistant Professor Department of Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School and a physician at the Pediatric Endocrinology Division at Children's Hospital Boston in Boston , MY. He is also the deputy medical director of clinical and translational research unit at Children's Hospital Boston. He is interested in rare genetic causes of growth disorders and the use of next generation sequencing technologies to understand pediatric endocrine disorders.

  • Mathieu Ferron, Ph.D., is Associate Professor and Director of the Research Unit Molecular integrative physiology and the Institute of Montr al-clinical research in Montr-al, QC , Canada. He is also an active member of the Research Centre of the Montreal Diabetes and assistant professor in the Department of Medicine of the University of Montr-al. He is researching the role of vitamin K dependent protein in glucose metabolism and bone.

  • Sheng Wu, Ph.D., is an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. The goal of his research is to study the mechanisms underlying the interaction between metabolism and reproduction. She is currently studying insulin and androgen interaction in infertility-induced obesity.

2014 winners FLARE Internship Award Endocrine Society are listed below. FLARE interns serve as leaders on the Company based governance committees for one year and mentors for undergraduate students in the Access Program for minorities, which is designed to encourage undergraduate minority sub represented to pursue advanced studies in the biomedical sciences.

  • Michael D. Burton, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Joel Elmquist the hypothalamic Research Division at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas , TX. His research focuses on how the peripheral sensory neurons transmit information to the brain to regulate energy homeostasis of the body and the metabolism of glucose.
  • Diana Cittelly, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of research at the department of pathology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO. His research focuses on the hormonal regulation of the microenvironment of the brain during the progression of metastatic cancer.

  • Diana Cruz Topete, PhD, works as a researcher in the laboratory of Dr. John A. Cidlowski to the National National Health Sciences Institute Environmental Health Institute in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. She is currently studying the effects of hormones endogenous corticosteroids in cardiac physiology and gene expression.

  • Hector L. Franco, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow American Cancer Society at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. In his research, he uses an interdisciplinary approach to study the molecular mechanisms of endocrine and inflammatory signaling in breast cancer.

  • Ekaette Mbong, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Diego in La Jolla, California. It studies the effects of obesity on reproductive capacity.

  • Glenn C. Rowe PhD, is an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. His research focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie the metabolism in the musculoskeletal and cardiovascular system.

  • Bryan Wilson, BS, is a PhD / MBA student in Molecular Medicine and Translational Sciences at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston Salem, North Carolina. His research focuses on intracellular mechanisms of action of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) on the regulation of blood pressure and kidney damage.
